INSTRUMENTS OF JOY : ANSWERED PRAYERS

The long-awaited day had finally arrived! Reverend Hamilton affectionately known as ‘Babu’ in Kenya, made his much-anticipated visit to Dr. Buconyori high School. This wasn’t his first visit to the school, he’s made the trip a few times before, swinging by every couple of years during the Montana summer. His excitement to be back in Kenya was so profound as he journeyed thousands of miles with his family, eager to connect with the children he sponsors and also with the boys at the high school on a day-to-day basis until he flies back home. A retired computer science teacher, Babu embodies passion and commitment with every interaction he has with the students, which they truly love and always look forward to!

As we drove in the school compound, an unusual silence hung in the air, making us wonder if the students were perhaps on a break. To our surprise, we soon learned that half of them had headed to a nearby school for a zonal football match, leaving only a few behind. The welcome we received was warm and heartfelt from the school principal. He led us to his office where conversations flowed effortlessly. We quickly found ourselves engrossed in discussions about the students, their academic progress and catching up on all that had happened since Babu’s last visit. Babu’s memory was impressive, he recalled many of the students by name and expressed a keen interest in learning about their lives after high school graduation. His genuine curiosity and concern were evident as he eagerly inquired about their whereabout and progress.

As a father, Babu brought special gits to the boys, including a vast collection of books spanning science, fiction and research. He also provided the school with a range of musical instruments, addressing a long-standing need. Previously, they had to borrow instruments from the church every Sunday which was quite burdensome. Babu expressed his gratitude to his church group in the USA, acknowledging their generous decision to support the school with such meaningful gesture.

The students face lit up with wide smiles and their eyes sparked with anticipation. They eagerly unboxed the instruments with great enthusiasm. Almost immediately, some started tuning and experimenting with sounds, while others exchanged high fives and shared the joy with their friends. The field was filled with chatter, it was a moment of pure elation, an answered prayer and an assured vision of future musical adventures!

It was getting to late afternoon; Babu expressed his desire to support the boys b watching their soccer game. We headed to the neighboring school and, fortunately, found them already playing. They had scored one goal with only ten minutes left on the clock. We joined the spectators, chanting and cheering them on. In the blink of an eye, they scored a second goal just as the whistle blew! We all rushed onto the field to congratulate them and celebrate their victory. They had qualified for the semifinals, and the joy and excitement on their faces were infectious. The day ended on a high note, filled with smiles, laughter and the promise of more victories to come!
